Life's little moments

While standing in line at our local convenient store. I was minding my own business waiting in line. When I noticed there was an older woman in her late 50's unable to stand in one place with a sort of rocking jittery motion.
I thought maybe she was just a little anxious for needing to be somewhere and the line was very long. A few moments earlier I recall this same woman came out of the store to tell across the street to a friend in a vehicle that the line was long and it was taking forever to get through.
I can sense that the 5 to 6 of us in the store, customers including the work staff, that something was a little off, but no one said anything about it while she was there.
When she had left the store in a hurried sluggish manner a comment was made that she was a "little amphetamines this morning". All of us in the store let out a small laugh and shook our heads in the obvious truth to the statement.
After I got back into my seat in the car I thought, how sad is it that we all know they this person is killing themselves with drugs and we are just sort of OK with it. But what are we to do about it? Our society is at a very interesting time, the balance is on the cusp of shifting and I fear that shift will not be for the betterment but the demise of us all.
